History

Robert Bremner (c. 1713-1789) was a Scottish music publisher born in Edinburgh. Bremner established his music sheet music printing enterprise in Edinburgh in mid-1754 and began publishing music on behalf of the Edinburgh Musical Society. Bremner later became an agent for the Society, traveling to London and Dublin to search for singers and musicians to feature at its concerts. He printed his own The Rudiments of Music, commissioned by the Edinburgh town council which became a highly popular musical instruction book and Bremner displayed his musical prowess by arranging and publishing his Collection of Scots Reels or Country Dances in 1757. In 1762 Bremner moved his business to London, although the Edinburgh establishment was retained. He continued to enjoy great success and, on his death, his business was bought by Preston & Son.

Robert Bremner Urtext Editions

Robert Bremner Publishing prints and distributes books for both authors and composers. For sheet music productions, Robert Bremner Publishing works with the composer to produce an urtext edition that, whilst retaining the composer's intent throughout, improves upon the clarity of the notation and may inform the addition or removal of details in dynamics (tempo, colour, etc) to give the performer a clearer view to the composer's world. This must be coupled with providing the ideal balance of interpretative opportunity for the musician by not using a 'strangling' degree of dynamic detail. The result is an urtext edition of the highest quality that informs and inspires the musician of all languages worldwide.

Copyright and Distribution

Robert Bremner Publishing distinguishes itself from many publishers in that when the Robert Bremner urtext edition of the work is established, the copyright for the publication can be retained by author when desired. The author greatly benefits from the quality control associated with the Robert Bremner Publishing stamp, the printing and distribution systems by Robert Bremner Publishing and a strong respect by Robert Bremner Publishing towards the possibilities that the modern world provides for the composer.
